Nirvana – The absolute staple band of the 1990s. Everybody knows that drum beat and everyone knows THAT song. And here’s why.
Nirvana was formed in 1987 in Washington. Founded by their infamous lead singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain and their bassist Krist Novoselic. They went through a few drummers before finally settling on the young, long haired Dave Grohl.
Meanwhile they made their place in the growing popular grunge scene and released their first album Bleach. But in 1991 they signed to a major label and were shot to stardom. Smells Like Teen Spirit became a household name and the music video was played religiously on MTV. This simplistic, dark video was shot in a school gym hall with a crowd having a jolly time rocking out to Nirvana playing in front of them.
And from here they grew and grew in fame and Kurt’s mental health would turn with it. Kurt had always suffered from poor mental health but with fame, being married to the popular blonde in the rock scene, Courtney Love, and becoming a dad to Francis Bean, it all became too much and Kurt made headlines in the saddest way possible.
Dave Grohl went on to form Foo Fighters, swapping the drums for vocals and guitar. Another band that grew ever more popular. So much so, Dave has been known as “the nicest guy in rock” and became good friends with metal god Lemmy.
